The short version
- Your GPX file is read in your browser. When you ask for your views, we send only the route and summit time to our render server, and delete those previews after 7 days unless you order.
- We use your route, summit time and order details only to make and deliver your print.
- We don’t sell your data, and this site uses no tracking cookies, analytics or ad pixels.
Who we are
Arêtiste makes framed, acrylic and metal prints of the mountains people have climbed. The site is operated by Zachary Hall. Questions about this policy: zhall4513@gmail.com.
What we collect, and why
Your hike (GPX file)
A GPX file is a record of where you were and when, so we treat it carefully. When you choose a file on the Create page, it is read and checked inside your browser. When you continue to choose your view, we send the route points, the summit date and time and your print title to our render server, which draws your previews; we don’t send the rest of the file (such as heart rate or device details). Preview files are deleted automatically after 7 days. When you place an order, we keep the route and print file so we can make your print. If you start from one of our classic routes instead, we use that sample route and the summit time you enter.
If you search for a mountain or trail instead of uploading a file, what you type is sent through our server to OpenStreetMap services (the Photon search by komoot and the OpenStreetMap API) to find it on the map. We don’t send anything that identifies you with those searches, and we don’t keep a log of them.
Your route’s starting point can reveal places you go, such as a trailhead near home. We use it only to make your print. We never publish it or show it to other customers.
Order details
When you buy, we collect your name, email address, shipping address, the print title you choose and your order options. We use these to make, ship and support your order, and to send you messages about it.
Payment
Payments are handled by our payment processor (Stripe). Your card details go directly to them; we never see or store your full card number. See Stripe’s privacy policy.
Technical information
Like any website, our hosting provider records basic request information (such as IP address, browser type and the pages requested) in server logs, used for security and keeping the site running. We do not use cookies for tracking or advertising, and we do not run analytics or advertising pixels. If that changes, we will update this policy first.
While you design a print, your choices (your route, title, summit time, view, material, size and frame or finish) are kept in your browser’s session storage, so a refresh or the back button doesn’t lose your work. They stay on your device and are cleared when you close the tab. A note of whether 3D scenes should run at lower quality on your device is kept the same way.
Who we share it with
Only with the service providers we need to run the shop, and only what they need:
- Print and fulfillment partners: your print file, name and shipping address, to print, frame or mount, and ship your order.
- Payment processor: payment and billing details.
- Hosting and email providers: to run the site and send order emails.
We don’t sell or rent personal information, and we don’t share it for advertising. We may disclose information if the law requires it.
How long we keep it
We keep order records for as long as needed to fulfill your order, honor our remake promise and meet tax and accounting obligations. We keep your route and print file so we can remake or reorder your print; ask us any time and we will delete your route data, unless we must keep part of an order record by law.
Your choices and rights
You can ask us to show, correct or delete the personal information we hold about you by emailing zhall4513@gmail.com. Depending on where you live (for example California), you may have additional rights under state law; we honor those requests and won’t treat you differently for making them. We don’t sell or share personal information as those laws define it.
Security
The site is served over HTTPS and we limit who can access order data. No system is perfectly secure, but we take reasonable steps to protect your information.
Children
The shop is not directed to children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect their personal information.
Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date at the top of this page. Significant changes will be posted here before they take effect.
